Keefe Gorman, a managing director of investments at Merrill Lynch, has made a name for himself both in financial circles and in the nonprofit sector. Committed to community service, Keefe Gorman has carved out time from his busy schedule at Merrill Lynch to serve on several charitable boards and committees, including one for Rotary Club of Ithaca Sunrise, an affiliate of Rotary International.

Many Rotary groups are active both in their local communities and across the world. For instance, Rotary Club of Ithaca Sunrise recently completed a project to establish the first-ever adult English language training program in Ovalle, Chile.

Other Rotary International projects have been completed throughout Central and South America, including one that brought water access to people living in Tingo Pucará, Ecuador. Together with Peace Corps and Builders Beyond Borders volunteers, Rotary members traveled to Tingo Pucará to construct pipelines that would deliver potable water to a village situated at 12,600 feet. Previously, the village’s only source of water was a spring located nearly 5,000 feet down a steep path.

An accomplished financial advisor, Keefe Gorman has garnered numerous accolades in his role as a managing director with Merrill Lynch. Beyond his duties at Merrill Lynch, Keefe Gorman supports charitable and civic organizations such as The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Meals on Wheels, and Rotary International.

Rotary International offers leadership and educational opportunities to its more than 1.2 million global members through its peace fellowships, which enable individuals to study at one of the Rotary Peace Centers and learn how to promote tolerance and peace. Rotary International offers two types of fellowship, one of which culminates in a professional development certificate after completion of a three-month peace-related program at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. The organization also offers a master’s degree fellowship at institutions such as the University of Queensland in Australia and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University in the United States.

For more than a century, Rotary International has maintained its commitment to address challenging global issues in the areas of world peace, community growth, the well-being of women and children, literacy, and the prevention and treatment of disease. Among the significant accomplishments of Rotary members is the eradication of polio in the vast majority of countries worldwide.

Some people consider cycling to be a dangerous form of exercise. However, cycling actually offers one of the safer modes of transportation when certain rules are followed.

Only cyclists aged 12 and younger are allowed to ride on sidewalks legally. Cyclers aged 13 and older should use marked bike paths or lanes if available.

When cycling on the road, bikers always should travel in the same direction as vehicle traffic. In addition, cyclists should obey all regular traffic laws, including stopping at red lights and stop signs.

To avoid collisions and injuries, recommended safety equipment includes a helmet, bell or horn, working brakes, reflectors, and a headlight and taillight for nighttime cycling.

Founded in 2000, ShelterBox provides relief efforts such as supplies and shelter for families affected by disasters. The charitable organization has established itself as a leader in its field and works to help a minimum of 50,000 displaced families each year.

Rather than distribute a standardized box of supplies, ShelterBox prepares eponymous ShelterBoxes that contain supplies relevant to the disaster and location where it occurred. For example, the organization sent over 10,000 sets of hats, gloves, and scarves to survivors of the 2011 earthquake in Japan. Each ShelterBox does contain some de facto provisions such as a tent able to hold up in inclement weather, a water purifier, tools, a stove and cooking utensils, and activity packs to keep children preoccupied.
